About us
A Tradition of Excellence
The story of Champion & Wilton is one of evolution, dedication, and enduring reputation. It began in 1786 when master saddler Matthew Wilson established his workshop on London’s Oxford Street. Over the next century, the business changed hands through mergers and acquisitions, eventually becoming Champion & Wilton — a name born from the partnership of Henry Champion and Henry Staines Wilton in 1875.
Under Wilton’s leadership, the company thrived. Known not only for quality but for its pioneering spirit, Champion & Wilton became the preferred saddler for monarchs and aristocracy. The firm held numerous Royal Warrants, marking it as a maker of distinction. At its height, Champion & Wilton employed over 100 skilled craftsmen, all contributing to a legacy that would span continents and centuries.
Today, we honour that remarkable history by preserving the values upon which Champion & Wilton was built: excellence, elegance, and tradition. Our goal is not simply to produce saddles — it is to continue the story of a British institution.
The Soul of the Saddle
Our Craft
Champion & Wilton saddles are revered not just for their appearance, but for their functionality, durability, and comfort. Every detail is intentional. From the distinctive oblong stirrup assembly cover, a hallmark of the brand, to the elegant symmetry of the inlaid seat, each saddle is crafted with care and precision.
Earlier models often included subtle, charming features — such as the small off-side pocket, used by Victorian ladies to tuck away a handkerchief or letter. These touches speak of a time when form and function were given equal weight, and when a saddle was considered not just a tool, but a companion.
Later models embraced modern refinements, like wider pommels and thinner panels, improving the ride without compromising tradition. Champion & Wilton was also known for its preference for all-leather construction — in contrast to many competitors who relied on linen panels or doeskin seats.
For us, a saddle is never just a product. It’s a signature — of skill, tradition, and passion.

Royal Recognition
One of the highest honours a British craftsman can receive is a Royal Warrant — a mark of trust, approval, and excellence. Champion & Wilton has proudly held such warrants from the most distinguished names in history, including:
Queen Victoria
King Edward VII
Queen Alexandra
King George V
King George VI
Queen Elizabeth II
The Duke of Edinburgh
The German Emperor
Queen Maud of Norway
Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands
These appointments were not lightly granted. They represent decades of service, attention to detail, and unparalleled craftsmanship. Saddles bearing the Champion & Wilton name have graced royal stables and witnessed history from the back of a horse. They are as much a part of equestrian heritage as the riders who used them.
